Despite the beautiful scenery, it’s been a rough few days. The other day, after eleven months on the road, we had our first negative encounter with people. Two men who really wanted us to stop and take photographs with them wouldn’t take no for an answer (it was raining and we were trying to make it over the Ala-Bel pass before the quicky-approaching dark). They followed us in their car and stopped ahead of us on several occasions, eventually blocking the road and, when I tried to pass between them, pushed my bike and nearly knocked me off. It was weird and uncomfortable, but fortunately more obnoxious than anything else. 😡 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Soon the rain turned to hail and we were once again huffing up a pass in the freezing cold. Lauren started suffering from altitude sickness and I discovered another busted spoke nipple on my back wheel at the very top of the pass. We had a long, chilly descent, then got chased by five of the meanest, most aggressive dogs we’ve been chased by this whole trip. 🐕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Eventually we camped in a bee farmer’s yard, and in the morning as we were leaving I got stung in the back of the head (this is what happens when you camp five feet from thirty bee boxes). 🐝 Neck cramps for days. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oh, and Lauren’s air mattress stopped holding air last week, so she’s pretty much been sleeping on the ground until we figure out some sort of replacement. This is especially problematic because we’re soon headed to mountains much, much higher and colder than anything we’ve been through yet. 🏔️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, lots of bad luck crammed into a few brief days. Fortunately we’re both okay, well-aware and very thankful that most days on this journey have been just great (and every other person we’ve met has been just wonderful). We still have a ways to go in Kyrgyzstan, but even with the difficulties we’re really enjoying the ride. 💙
